how can i get rid of a virus from my pc if its preventing me from opening internet explorer or my AVG?

my son clicked on a link to download a song and it caused my pc to get infected with a virus which is preventing any programs or applications (Internet explorer) to be opened up. I cannot click on the aVG or the malwarebytes programs to run them to remove it. I am running Windows XP....How can i fix this to be removed?
