How does insurance work when you & your spouse both have family coverage. Between the two how much is covered?

So, my husband has family insurance, which is basically covers 80% of everything but dental <of course> But about 40% of dental. Now, would it be worth me getting insurance as well for the family or would it not matter? Say if i had medical that covered 80% and dental that covered 40%, would they be combined, and what one company didnt pick up the other would? Minus deductibles of course? Or how does that even work....
