Can I make doctor visits before having insurance and relay the payments to my insurance company?

Just curious. I want to get a corrective procedure done ASAP and am taking all the steps to get to that point by but am technically paying out of pocket for these visits. Is there a way to defer the payments to my insurance company or does it only work from "Day 1" of your coverage?
