Can you transfer data from your xbox 360 onto a flash drive even when there is a E74 message?

My xbox recently got a E74 message and we don't know how to fix it. We checked the xbox website and they said before sending in your xbox you should have all data saved on a flash drive. But the problem is the e74 message is there and there's no way to get to any of our data? How can we put our data onto a flash drive with a e74 message?
