When you dye your hair, What is the best level of preoxide to use when going lighter?

I used a Box Color trying to go reddish brown and got more burgandy than my desired results. The box showed those pictures of "If ur hair is this you'll get this." well it didnt turn out as it should have. My hair was the exact color it showed in the picture for the before.
