I've had a miscarrage and my doctor just sent me home and phone him if anything gets worse why?

My husband and i started trying for our 2nd child four months ago and when i tested myself around 5 weeks ago the tests were negative. I started to feel a bit off colour about a week so i took a test and the first was a very faint positive waited until the next morning and the line was a lot stronger. I phoned up my GP on the same day and managed to get a appointment for next monday only to start bleeding really heavily last night, so i phoned my GP back this morning and managed to get an emergency appointment. When i went my doctor prodded and poked around a bit asked me loads of questions and then informed me that it looked as if i had been 3 to 4 weeks pregnant but i had miscarried.
