Why does Australia spend more on military than Canada considering we have less people?

Additional Details

Australia spends $30billion a year of GDP on Military when we only have a population of 22.5million people, mean while Canada a country of 36million spends $18billion a year of GDP on military. Wouldn't this money that Australia currently spends on the military a year be better of to be spend on public health and education and other needy government programmes? What are your comments to that?
