How would australia know if you were outside the country when you applied for your work holiday visa?

I'm living on a farm in australia and want to apply for a work holiday visa so i can start making some money as i intend to become a permanent resident eventually. My parents can lodge the application from california. Question is, could I get away with it? How would the australian government know?
